Ignatian Currents - Always Discerning: Ignatian Spirituality for a New Millennium

Description:

Facilitated by Fr. Joseph A. Tetlow, S.J.  and Carol Atwell Ackels

Friday, December 1
7:00 – 9:00 pm

Pope Francis has explicitly and repeatedly stated that discernment is essential for anyone who is a follower of Jesus Christ. But what, exactly, is discernment? Why must we do it? When do we do it? How should we do it? How are lay Christians to implement discernment into not only life’s big decisions but also into the everyday, more mundane choices we constantly find ourselves having to make? This evening will explore the dynamic interrelationship of head, heart, and hands, which is crucial to the discernment process.

Saturday, December 2
9:00 am – 4:00 pm

At the beginning of his new book, Always Discerning, Fr. Joe Tetlow, S.J. writes: "Discernment is a gift offered to everyone who believes in Jesus Christ. Discernment has become a constant in the lives of mature Christians. ... We still need the virtues of gentleness and self-mastery. But more than ever before, we need some other gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, knowledge, counsel, and understanding."

What exactly is discernment? Why must we do it? When do we do it? How should we do it? This daylong workshop retreat explores these questions and some answers. If prayer has grown more shallow than it could be, this day will offer some depths to plumb. If making the Examen has grown a bit vapid, there are some things to look into. And if you wonder how a mature disciple of Christ can sensibly live joyfully in a world of spite and hate, division and violence, this day will open a path.

Guided by Scripture, the words of Pope Francis, and Ignatian wisdom, we will learn the necessity and importance of the dynamic interrelationship of head, heart, and hands as crucial to the discernment process.

The day will proceed with input, sharing in triads, and plenary sessions for questions and discussion. We hope everyone will leave more keenly aware of how God has blessed our lifeworld with the gifts God has given each of us.
