JRH Lay Leadership Programs … Outreach to Our Parishes!

Our Lay Leadership Program Director, Martha Campbell, reports that there are still a few spaces in our 2015-2016 program year and we are now taking registrations for our 2016-2017 program year. Time to plan ahead! Consider one of our spirituality programs for your parish. Teams of qualified lay leaders are prepared to share our programs based on The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. Here is a brief synopsis of what we can offer on-site at your parish:

The Pilgrim Way of Ignatius Loyola offers a “taste of Ignatian Spirituality,” the spirituality of Pope Francis, which nurtures openness to the call of God in our lives. Some questions addressed in the program include: What happens when you encounter Christ? Is it possible to
find God in all things? (4-part series, 90 minute sessions)

Praying with St. Ignatius Retreat-in-Daily-Life follows the pattern set out by The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. Now in its 10th with revisions along the way, this retreat
has set hearts on fire with love for Jesus Christ! (8-part series, 2 hour sessions)

The Called and Sent Spiritual Formation Program, grounded in the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, nurtures spiritual deepening in individuals and communities for service of Christ’s mission in the world. This program is comprised of six modules which can be taken
individually or as a series.

Ignatian Foundations introduces key aspects of Ignatian Spirituality (prayer,
discernment, action for justice): 6 monthly 2-hour sessions and a day-long retreat.

Encountering Jesus Christ focuses on “interior knowledge of Jesus Christ” which is experienced through Ignatian contemplation of the Gospels: 6 weekly 90 minute
sessions and a day-long retreat.

Discernment and Decision-Making applies practical knowledge and application of “discernment of spirits” and decision making according to the teaching of Ignatius
Loyola: 6 weekly 2-hour sessions and a day-long retreat.

The Christian at Work in the World is offered in two parts: A) Catholic Social Teaching: and B) Work-Place Spirituality. Each part, which can be taken together or separately,
consists of 3 bi-weekly 2-hour sessions and a half-day retreat.

Embracing the Mystery addresses landmarks on the spiritual journey including suffering and death, redemption and grace: 3 monthly 3-hour sessions and an
overnight retreat.

Living Prayer Retreat-in-Daily Life centers on life in the Spirit including personal prayer, spiritual direction, liturgy and sacraments: 6 weekly 2-hour sessions.

For further information and to hear more of what people are saying about these programs, please contact a member of our leadership team: Margaret Balewski
([email protected]), Martha Campbell ([email protected]), Claudette Matero ([email protected]) or Jean Sullivan ([email protected]).

DEEPENING OUR AWARENESS –
SOMETHING TO PONDER

BLESSING OUR WORLD NOW *
A Continuing Reflection by John O’Donohue

Sometimes when we look out, the world seems so dark. War, violence, hunger, and misery seem to abound. This makes us anxious and helpless. What can I do in my private little corner of life that could have any effect on the march of world events? The usual answer is: nothing. We then decide to do what we can for our own, and leave the great events to their domain. Thus, we opt out, and join the largest majority in the world: those who acquiesce. Believing ourselves to be helpless, we hand over all our power to forces and systems outside us that then act in our names; they go on to put their beliefs into action; and ironically these actions are often sinister and destructive. We live in times when the call to full and critically aware citizenship could not be more urgent. We need to rediscover the careless courage, yet devastating simplicity, of the little boy who, in the middle of the numbed multitude, in naive Socratic fashion, blurts out: “But the emperor has no clothes.” When spoken, the word of truth can bring down citadels of falsity.

Real presence is the ideal of all true individuation. When we yield to helplessness, we strengthen the hand of those who would destroy. When we choose indifference, we betray our world. Yet the world is not decided by action alone. It is decided more by consciousness and spirit; they are the secret sources of all action and behavior. The spirit of a time is an incredibly subtle, yet hugely powerful force. And it is comprised of the mentality and spirit of all individuals together. Therefore, the way you look at things is not simply a private matter. Your outlook actually and concretely affects what goes on. When you give in to helplessness, you collude with despair and add to it. When you take back your power and choose to see the possibilities for healing and transformation, your creativity awakens and flows to become an active force of renewal and encouragement in the world. In this way, even in your own hidden life you can become a powerful agent of transformation in a broken, darkened world. There is a huge force field that opens when intention focuses and directs itself toward transformation.

Holy Spirit, renouncing the attempt to plan and control everything to the last detail
and instead letting the Spirit enlighten, guide and direct us, leading us wherever
the Spirit wills. The Holy Spirit knows well what is needed in every time and place.
This is what it means to be mysteriously fruitful!”

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

News in these last months has chronicled repeated episodes of violence both in the US and the world. While our ministry in northeast Ohio does not directly address this violence, what we are doing contributes to our becoming “an active force of renewal and encouragement in the world.” Here is an update on our activities as we prepare for a new program year and respond to the encouraging message of John O’Donohue. (See “Something to Ponder,” on page 2 of this newsletter.)

Praying with St. Ignatius Retreat. We continue to plan for our fall retreats as we incorporate suggested changes and improvements based on the recent experience and feedback from our recent retreat teams. The Communications Committee, Margaret Balewski, Martha Campbell, Rev. Doug Koesel, Claudette Matero and Jean Sullivan continue to make contact with potential parishes and Christian communities as we plan for our coming program year.

CALLED AND SENT SPIRITUAL FORMATION PROGRAM

Five of the six modules of this program will be offered during the 2016 – 2017 program year. Ignatian Foundations and Discernment and Decision-Making will be offered this coming fall. Three modules, The Christian at Work in the World, Living Prayer and Embracing the Mystery will be offered this coming spring. The sixth module, Encountering Jesus Christ, will be offered in fall 2017.

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

An opportunity to serve Christ’s mission awaits us as we begin another Lenten journey. In this month’s “Something to Ponder,” Thomas Keating invites us to practice the “asceticism of just being good to everybody.” Bearing Christ’s goodness, we will be serving God’s people through these Lenten programs:

Praying with St. Ignatius, Parish Retreat. On January 13th, 12 retreat team members gathered to prepare for the Lenten retreats to be held this coming winter/spring at St. Christopher Parish, Rocky River and Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Lodi Worship Site. Meeting for 8 consecutive weeks, the retreat at St. Christopher began on January 27th. The retreat at Our Lady Help of Christians will begin on February 17

Nurturing the Call. The new 5-part pilot program for retreat leaders of the Praying with St. Ignatius and the Encountering Christ retreats at Jesuit Retreat House and St. Ignatius High School begins on February 11th. Organized by Martha Campbell and Janet Lehane, the program will be offered by a team of skilled leaders including, Jeannie and Patrick Cleary-Burns, Liz Nau, Margaret Balewski, Joan Carney and Debbie Dacone.

Food for the Journey. 21 participants gathered on January 16th to begin this new 4-part series, “Accidental Theologians … A Continuing Exploration.” Based on An Interrupted Life: The Diaries and Letters of Etty Hillesum, the sessions explore the “theology of hope” found in the writings of this victim of the Jewish holocaust.

With the opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we hear echoes of the Spiritual Exercises in Pope Francis’ call to live with greater mercy, tenderness and compassion, that is, to “love as God loves” (SE # 230 – 237). Kathleen Norris, in her message on page 2 of this newsletter (see Lay Leadership Newsletters under pages)(See “Deepening Our Awareness – Something to Ponder”) shares an Advent reminder of “God’s enduring compassion for us.” As we conclude our fall programming and prepare for the winter/spring offerings, we aspire to embody God’s compassion toward those those we serve! Here is an update on our ministry:

Praying with St. Ignatius, Parish Retreat. On December 16th, 16 retreat team members will gather to reflect on and learn from the retreats held this past fall at Gesu Parish, University Heights and St. John Bosco Parish, Parma Heights. Preparations are being made for our Lenten retreats which will take place at Our Lady Help of Christians, Lodi and St. Christopher Parish, Rocky River.

Nurturing the Call. The fall practicum series which was offered to Leaders/Facilitators of the JRH Praying with St. Ignatius Retreat and the St. Ignatius / Walsh Jesuit Spirituality Program for Adults, concluded on December 5th with 13 leaders participating. Peggy Duffy, OSU led the group in a program which addressed “Leading Large Groups in Gospel Contemplation.” One participant commented, “I love these sessions as I consider things anew, I have grown my ministry skills and I meet others of similar mind and heart.”

Food for the Journey. 35 participants continue their reflection on Elizabeth Dreyer’s, Accidental Theologians. This month we reflect on the theology of the cross in the life and writings of Thérèse of Lisieux, 19th century Carmelite and Doctor of the Church. A new series begins in January as we continue the exploration of “accidental theologians” in the person of Etty Hillesum, a 20th century Jewish woman who died at Auschwitz.

The Pilgrim Way of Ignatius Loyola. This four-part introduction to the Spiritual Exercises will be offered at St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Parma during the upcoming Lenten season. Progam leaders include: Martha Campbell, Robin Craig, Rich Jerdonek, Amy McKenna and Sue Palmer. The team will meet in preparation along with Dr. Joan Nuth on January 12th.

Ignatian Currents. 44 participants engaged in the challenging program, Cultural Busyness and the “Ignatian Two Standards” offered by Dr. Laurie Cassidy this past October.

This coming program year is taking shape as leaders respond to the call to be with Christ on mission. Here is what’s happening:

Praying with St. Ignatius Retreat. A new opportunity for leadership development, called “team mentoring” will be piloted this fall. A committee comprised of Margaret Balewski, Martha Campbell, Patrick Cleary-Burns, Kathy Haag and Janet Lehane met this past month with Sr. Judy Cauley, CSJ (an expert in education and group process facilitation). Using the work of John Whitmore’s “Grow Model,” we are working to create a process that will help us to help one another in “growing” our leadership skills.

Called and Sent Spiritual Formation Program. Now that all six modules of this program have been designed, developed and piloted, we are planning to offer each module during the 2015-2016 program year.

Food for the Journey. Registration deadline for the fall program: August 28th. We will reflect on three women doctors of the Church who have helped to shape Christianity: Hildegard of Bingen (12th Century), Catherine of Siena (14th Century) and Thérèse of Lisieux (19th Century). The emphasis will be on deepening our understanding of Ignatian Spirituality in light of these women’s teachings.

Nurturing the Call. Janet Lehane and Martha Campbell will join together to facilitate the fall program for our Praying with St. Ignatius and Spirituality Program for Adults/ Encountering Christ retreat leaders. The program will offer opportunity to hone the skills involved in small group facilitation as well as leading “Gospel Contemplation” and other prayer forms for large groups.
