Ignatian Currents: Soul Work with Ignatius Loyola and Carl Jung

Description:

Ignatius Loyola and Carl Jung: Spiritual Companions

Friday, May 5, 2017
7:00 - 9:00 pm

What do a Twentieth-Century Swiss psychoanalyst and a Sixteenth-Century Spanish mystic have to say to each other? This presentation explores the unique compatibility between fundamental concepts of Carl Jung’s psychology and the dynamics of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. It begins with an overview of the structure of the psyche according to Jung, and then applies the Jungian framework to the Spiritual Exercises. Themes covered include: archetypal imagery in Ignatius’ account of his conversion experience, discernment of spirits and the soul’s journey to wholeness, desires of the deeper self and one’s original purpose, and hearing the call of God through the unconscious. In addition to input, there will be time for group sharing.

Soul Work, Jung, and "Field of Dreams"

Saturday, May 6, 2017
9:00 am - 4:00 pm

This program is based on Anthony Moore’s book, “Father, Son and Healing Ghosts.” It begins with a brief review of some fundamental Jungian concepts. Segments of the movie, “Field of Dreams,” are then viewed and interpreted from a Jungian perspective. The movie offers a powerful dramatization of Jung’s theory of the healing process of the human psyche. By using images and dialogue from the movie, we then outline a methodology for doing soul work. The final part of the program is a personal account of how the author applied this movie-inspired, Jungian methodology to his own inner journey to connect to his father, a Marine who was killed in World War II. Time will be given for personal reflection and group sharing.

Anthony Moore, PhD has been a student and practitioner of The Spiritual Exercises for almost 50 years. He holds a Ph.D. from Fordham University and a M. Div. from the Weston School of Theology. Serving for 34 years as a teacher, administrator and spiritual director at Georgetown University, he was engaged in many projects related to Ignatian spirituality and the Jesuit mission in higher education. Intrigued by the psychological depth of Ignatius, he sought an appropriate psychological partner for him to express his insights in contemporary terms. He found that partner in the Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung. Dr. Moore is the author of a book, “Father, Son and Healing Ghosts” which is about his inner journey using Jungian psychology and Ignatian spirituality to connect to his father who was killed in World War II.
