Jesuit Retreat Center

We would like to share some exciting changes with you – JRH has a new name, a new logo and a new mission statement. These changes are part of a strategic plan completed by our Board and staff to guide us into this new era, building upon our 120-year legacy.

We are changing our name from Jesuit Retreat House to Jesuit Retreat Center (JRC), recognizing that “Center” more fully captures the breadth and meaning of our mission and ministry in this time. With this new name comes a fitting new logo!

In our planning we also discerned a revision to our Mission Statement as follows:

Jesuit Retreat Center provides opportunities for reflection, prayer, and discernment,
Rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ,
Inspired by the spirituality of St. Ignatius,
Centered in a beautiful sacred setting,
To help all people respond to God’s loving invitation in their lives.

Included in our rebranding process are plans underway to redesign and improve our website. As we phase in all the changes, we ask for your patience if some things still bear our old name or logo. Eventually all communications will have the new name and logo.

food-for-the-journeyCome, join the gathered community as we explore the spiritual teachings of St. John of the Cross. Poet, pastor, spiritual director and mystic, this Spanish contemporary of Ignatius Loyola, will enrich our understanding of the spiritual journey, especially beyond the beginnings. Known for his writing on “the dark night,” perhaps his greatest witness is to the transforming action of God when we become simply open to receive God’s love.

These six study/prayer sessions are designed to enrich your personal spiritual deepening for ministry and will include ritual, prayer, input, and faith-sharing, based on your prayerful reading of the text. To facilitate the process, chapter assignments will be communicated and should be read in advance. No prior knowledge of John of the Cross is necessary to participate in these sessions. The only pre-requisite is a desire to embrace God in the whole of your life.

Ignatian Currents - A Pilgrim Spirituality for the 21st Century

Description:

dr-chris-pramukA Pilgrim Spirituality for the 21st Century - Music and the Listening Heart & The Grace of Accompanying Others in a Divided World

October 5 & 6
Friday 7:00 – 9:00 pm (coffee and conversation at 6:30 pm)
Saturday 9:00 am – 4:30 pm, includes lunch and Closing Mass at 3:30 pm

Presented by Dr. Christopher Pramuk

Whether in the classroom or in spiritual direction, in our workplaces, or with our families around the dinner table, how do we bring a spirit of empathy, deep listening, and compassion into difficult conversations? How to help ourselves and others resist fear and suspicion of the “other” and to cultivate what Pope Francis has called a “culture of encounter”?

Dr. Christopher Pramuk looks to Ignatius’ self-understanding as a “pilgrim” as an imaginative framework for exploring the difficulties and graces in our time of “walking with Jesus.” In his presentation on Friday evening, Dr. Pramuk will explore the “listening heart” of Ignatian spirituality drawing especially from Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, SJ, who provocatively suggests musical sensitivity and a “taste for silence” as central to an Ignatian disposition and way of proceeding in our relationships with others.

During Saturday’s session, Dr. Pramuk looks to Pope Francis, Fr. Nicolas, and other contemporary Jesuits, to explore the gifts of the pilgrim imagination. How might Ignatian spirituality form in us a deeper capacity for working creatively and lovingly with “found materials,” the latent gifts of persons and communities we encounter along the way? In the language of Pope Francis, “God accompanies persons,” and we must always seek to accompany persons as God does, with love, mercy, mutuality, and presence.

Dr. Pramuk will draw from his own life experiences as an adoptive parent of two children from Haiti, as well as his experiences with students from diverse racial, cultural and economic backgrounds in the Jesuit university classroom. Sessions will include input from Dr. Pramuk, reflective silence, small and large group conversations.

Dr. Christopher Pramuk is the chair of Ignatian Thought and Imagination, and associate professor of theology at Regis University in Denver, Colorado. His books include Hope Sings, So Beautiful: Graced Encounters Across the Color Line (2013), a sustained meditation on race relations in society and church, and two award-winning studies of Thomas Merton and his relationship to the Feminine Divine.

Hearts on Fire 2018

Hearts on Fire 2018 was an outstanding evening in which we raised over $200,000 in total for the Jesuit Retreat House, an all-time record! Thanks to the generosity of many during our Raise-the-Paddle fundraiser, we will be able to replace our old laundry equipment and renovate our laundry room to better serve the increased need brought on by our new space.

We are incredibly humbled by your generosity and cannot thank you enough for your strong support of JRH whether through advertising, tickets, sponsorships, or donations.

Honorees with JRH Executive Director, Rick Krivanka (not picture, Fr. Casey Bukala, SJ)Please take a moment to view our tribute videos for Martha Campbell, Bob Hager, Fr. Casey Bukala, SJ (Award accepted by Matthew Mooney), and Brian Dean. Their contributions to JRH are truly inspiring! We have heard great affirmation of the videos and wanted everyone to be able to enjoy them. You can also view a photo album of the event HERE.

The theme of this year’s event is “With God, all things are possible”, and we want to thank each of you for being the blessings that helped make this possible.

We hope that we will see you again, and that you will save the date for our next Hearts on Fire on May 10th, 2019!

Friday 7:00 – 9:00 pm (coffee and conversation at 6:30 pm)
Saturday 9:00 am – 4:30 pm, includes lunch and Closing Mass at 3:30 pm

Presented by Fr. J. Michael Sparough, SJ

Experience the Examen and Prayer of Imagination in new and different ways. Each session will include input from Fr. Michael, a prayer experience, time for journaling, small group sharing and large group session. This program is more in the style of a retreat than a workshop; if you have a journal, please consider bringing it.

If you are new to Ignatian prayer practices, Fr. Michael’s approach will allow you to learn and experience the basics. If you are an experienced practitioner or retreat leader, this program may breathe new life into your practices by opening their form and meaning. Program will also incorporate reflections on leading others in prayer.

The session on Friday night will focus on the Examen Prayer; Saturday session will focus on the Prayer of Imagination. Breath work, body postures, scripture dramatizations, and guided meditations will be utilized to help participants deepen their experience. The program culminates with closing liturgy at 3:30 which will incorporate elements of the program.

Immerse yourself in peace by staying overnight and having additional time for reflection, or select the commuting option or single session as your schedule allows. Resources (books and CDs) will be available for purchase during the program.

Fr. J. Michael Sparough, SJ, is a retreat director and spiritual director at the Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington, IL. He holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama and a Doctor of Ministry from St Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, IL. He is the founder of Charis, a national Jesuit retreat ministry for young adults in their 20s and 30s, and has trained spiritual directors at Loyola University-Chicago. A prolific writer and speaker, Fr. Michael has published books, CDs, and DVDs on prayer, discernment, and the sacraments.

Overview

front-entrance-oct-2017It has been an exciting year at the Jesuit Retreat House! The new addition, after many years of prayer, planning and hard work, is now open. We are living into the dream of better serving far more people than ever before in the spirit of Ignatian spirituality. We feel very blessed to have played a part in the significant expansion of our capabilities and our facility.

In this time of new hope, change and expansion, it is more important than ever to remember our mission, and remain focused on providing programs and retreats to bring people to a deeper encounter with God. As one inspiring example for which we are very grateful, we host 3-4 day Kairos high school retreats that provide opportunities for students to contemplate God’s role in their lives and to deepen their relationship with God.

Today, young people, and all people, face increasing stresses and demands vying for their attention. They need a place that offers time for inner peace and reflection, and they find it here.

As one retreatant told us, “I feel overwhelming serenity and calm and peace when I enter here – just driving in…my life is so fast paced outside.”

In the words of Fr. Robert Welsh, S.J., “This is a place where people fall in love with Christ.” These reflections convey a profound insight into the impact that retreats rooted in the Ignatian tradition have been having on our community for the past 119 years.

Impact

manresa-chapel-oct-2017We are committed to affordability and retreat fees do not cover all of our operating costs. We humbly rely on donors such as you for the funds to sustain and grow JRH. Your participation in the Annual Appeal is essential and will have a direct impact on our continued offering of vital retreats and programs. Based upon our planning to best utilize our expanded facility, we would like to present a few of our needs for your consideration and support at this time.

  • Provide more programs that our community has come to enjoy and depend upon, and add
new options for married couples, young adults, people in specific occupations, and more.
  • Invest in technology that will help us meet the needs of our retreatants more efficiently
and effectively in website registration, hospitality and guest satisfaction.
  • Replace laundry equipment that can no longer be adequately repaired.
  • Expand our staff resources to support growing services and enhance guest hospitality.

The spirituality of St. Ignatius calls forth gratitude. Please know that we are ever grateful
for your friendship and support, which provides men and women of all ages with life
changing opportunities. Thank you for whatever you are able to give. We continue to pray
for your needs and your loved ones each day.

We did it. What you see today is proof of what we can accomplish together to create a place of peace that ignites the hearts of our community. Building this beautiful new addition was not possible without your generous support.

We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to all who made our new building addition possible.

Our Dedication was truly a beautiful and memorable ceremony! It began with the Celebration of the Mass in the new Loyola Meeting Room. Fr. Brian Paulson SJ, Provincial of the Midwest Province, was Principal Celebrant with Jesuit and Diocesan priests as concelebrants. Following Mass a very moving Video of Thanks from Jesuits and JRH staff was presented. Fr. Paulson then led a blessing ritual through each room of the new addition as all present lined the hallways and sang Veni Sancte Spiritus. A reception followed.

You can view the Dedication Highlights in our photo gallery:

Come and Grow the Vision and Dream for our Time

To Journey

Beginning in 1898, JRH is the first and longest continuing place in the United States providing retreats for laypersons as well as for priests and religious. For over 119 years, men and women of all ages have accepted the same invitation: to get to know themselves more deeply and to encounter God’s love.

Why JRH?

We provide a welcoming and sacred place for reflection and prayer where people can find peace and discover deeper meaning and direction in their lives. We offer and host retreats and programs for an evening, a day, weekend, 8 days and 30 days. People come from Northeast Ohio, across the USA, and around the world.

We want to extend this mission to as many as possible.

To Build

new-building_front3The present building was inadequate for current and future needs. We want to be able to serve multiple groups at the same time and fully utilize our capacity. Since the turn of this century, we have envisioned a new era for JRH in better serving more people. Our new addition and renovation provides:

  • A large meeting space for up to 135 people with the latest audio-video capability
  • Multiple meeting rooms for 8 –12 people
  • A beautiful new prayer space
  • New rooms for spiritual direction
  • 10 new bedrooms with private baths – ideal for retreats for married couples
  • Updating the over 60 year old current building with needed improvements and AC in bedrooms
  • Greatly improved accessibility for all including handicapped & elderly persons (entry, elevator, restrooms)
  • New shrines and improvements to our grounds
  • A stronger endowment to sustain our mission

To Profess

You are invited to become a partner in our mission. Help us to profess our faith and to finish our new addition with great hope in serving many generations to come. How can you help? By pledging a donation toward our capital campaign. You will help us to fulfill this vision and dream entrusted to our care and support. The retreatants of the future will remember you and pray for you, in thanksgiving for your generosity.

You can pledge a multi-year gift or make a one-time contribution. Your gift can be stocks and bonds, or you can remember JRH in your will. However you choose to give, you will be part of an exciting life-giving mission. Your sacrifice – and that of others – will make a great difference for generations to come. For whatever you are able to do.
