Jesuit Retreat House

Meet Fr. Carl Bonk, S.J.

Jesuit Retreat House has greatly enhanced its spiritual programming with the addition of Carl Bonk, S.J., a longtime teacher, pastor, and spiritual director.  Fr. Bonk began his new ministry at Jesuit Retreat House on January 5, 2009.

Father Carl A. Bonk, S.J., was born in Detroit , Michigan in 1941 and entered the Society of Jesus on September 10, 1960.  During 48 years of ministry he has been blessed with a broad range of roles and experiences.  His first assignment was with Walsh Jesuit High School from 1971 to 1979, where he was treasurer of the school and a part time teacher and counselor. He taught theology and coached freshman baseball at St. Ignatius High School from 1983 to 1992.   After a sabbatical from teaching he directed retreats at Jesuit Retreat House and Loyola of the Lakes Jesuit Retreat House near Akron from 1993 to 2000.  Most recently, he served as pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul (Jesuit) Church, the oldest church in Detroit .

In addition to directing retreats at Jesuit Retreat House, Fr. Bonk serves as a bi-ritual priest with the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic diocese centered in Parma . An avid reader and writer, Fr. Bonk plans on starting a spiritual blog in connection with his ministry at Jesuit Retreat House.

Sr. Mary Ann Flannery, S.C., executive director of Jesuit Retreat House, expressed enthusiasm at the arrival of Fr. Bonk.  According to Sr. Flannery, It is a wonderful addition.  He brings the experience of a longtime spiritual director and pastor of an urban parish, and this broad experience greatly enhances the development of spirituality at Jesuit Retreat House.

Fr. Bonk may be contacted at (440) 884-9300, (216) 281-7383 or [email protected].  His blog may be viewed at http://jesuitretreathouse.blogspot.com/.
